Museums Matter

November 9, 2015

Going to work every day, it’s easy to forget exactly where you work. After all, it’s just your job, and a job’s a job. But every now and then, you have to take a look around and be amazed at the wonderful place where you work. You work in a museum! How great is that?

Museums are special places. They are the keepers of culture and history, where people are given the opportunity to tour both the unique and the mundane. Museums allow us to better understand what’s gone before and what’s going on now. It doesn’t matter if you work at the Smithsonian or the World’s Smallest Museum in Superior, Arizona (It’s 134 square feet). Museums make a real difference in the lives of the people who visit and the communities they serve. Read more

Pop Ups – Art and Store

November 2, 2015

One of the core tenets of art is to continually push the boundaries of what’s expected. Recently, a Denver-based artist created a pop-up art exhibit featuring a 40-foot tall inflatable, blue sculpture of a prospector. It sits across the street from the Colorado state capital in a parking lot and will only be on exhibit for three weeks. Alongside this pop-up art is a pop-up store housed in a glossy black, cut down shipping container that features a single saleable item. Read more

Catch the Eye

October 26, 2015

Anyone who’s ever watched HGTV has learned the power of staging. The home, at first, seems drab and uninteresting. Then, after a professional home stager has finished, the home is transformed into something chic, luxurious eye-catching.

While it may not be practical or appropriate to call in a home stager to revamp your store, a critical eye and a little creativity can go a long way to re-creating your space for maximum appeal. Borrowing a few tips from home stagers you can immediately make a difference on how your store space will attract and retain customers.  Read more

Energy

October 19, 2015

Recently, a few of us went out to eat on a busy Saturday night in the suburbs and every restaurant for miles around was running at full capacity. We decided on a nearby chain restaurant and called ahead to get our names on their waiting list. But when we got to the restaurant, the manager told us our name wasn’t there and our wait would be half an hour. Read more

Hang Time

October 12, 2015

In my younger days, I rode horses. I competed in “eventing,” a triathalon over multiple days with a single equine partner. The total points accumulated from all three elements of a competition determine the horse and rider’s placing.

The first element, dressage, is a graceful ride with a choreographed sequence of movements in an enclosed ring, similar to the compulsories in figure skating. The next two elements are all about jumping fences. Cross country requires horse and rider to be in excellent shape and have a bold attitude in tackling a course over a long outdoor circuit consisting of 15 to 20 solidly built natural obstacles including logs, stone walls, ditches, bank drops and water obstacles – all of which must be successfully completed within an optimum time. 5 Simple Steps to Damage Your Brand

October 5, 2015

What do you think when you hear Apple?  Coca Cola? Warren Buffet? Samsung? Smithsonian or James Bond?

They’re all different and unique brands, but they all conjure up positive emotions. Creativity. Happiness. Trust. Credibility. Sex appeal.

Now, what happens when you think about Kodak? Blockbuster? Pam Am?

Probably something along the lines of out-of-touch, couldn’t keep up or…who? Read more

EMV Charges Up Security

September 28, 2015

If you are a consumer with credit and debit cards, chances are you’ve opened your mail recently and were greeted with a new credit card that include an embedded computer chip. For consumers, these chipped cards mean added security and maybe a little more peace of mind when using the card at local retailers and ATMs.

But at the other end of the transaction, retailers who take cards may find the addition of the chip adds confusion and potentially increased costs for their business. Read more

Management by Retaliation

September 21, 2015

There are many ways to manage people.  Some managers are team builders, while others are teachers. A few managers go strictly by the book, while others apparently have never read the book.

Recently, I had a conversation with an employee who was working at a well-known big-box retailer.  She’d only been working there about eight months, but had begun to settle into her new job.  She seemed to be a hard-working and conscientious employee.  She shows up on time and works hard to master all the duties of her new job.  She watched all the training videos diligently and has tried to incorporate all their guidance into her daily routines. Get Fit With MBWA

September 14, 2015

There’s a lot of different management styles, but one of the best maybe just one of the most simple. Some say that Abraham Lincoln started this management style during the Civil War. Dave Hewlett and Bill Packard, founders of computer giant Hewlett-Packard, are generally regarded as the masters of this management style. Read more

I Want to Hire That Guy…

September 7, 2015

A few days ago I walked to an auto parts store with the full intent of going unnoticed by the store’s floor staff. This may sound pretentious, but in my experience they don’t usually bring much to my shopping excursions. Simply put, more annoying than useful.

So when I walked in a young kid behind the counter heard the bell that goes off when the door opens and was right there asking if I needed help. So much for stealth mode. I mumbled something about needing a gallon of window washing fluid and a couple of other accessories for my car hoping to deflect him, but from that moment on he was by my side. Read more
